Are you a real estate agent or construction professional?
“Of course I test for radon…”
In the past, home inspectors who wanted to offer radon testing services had to meet a bunch of requirements:
- 16 classroom hours, passing a comprehensive exam, and 16 hours of biennial continuing education;
- Certification by a nationally recognized proficiency program such as the National Radon Safety Board or the National Radon Proficiency Program;
- The purchase of expensive testing and analytical equipment from certified providers;
- Regular calibration of this equipment by certified laboratories;
- Regular Quality Assurance testing using spiked samples, blanks and calibration tests on equipment.
All of these activities involve substantial costs and fees.
Recent communications from Ryan Paris, the state official in the Virginia Department of Health responsible for the radon program, suggests a significant ratcheting up of state activity including inspections and enforcement activities as well as public service notices and awareness campaigns. They have substantially upgraded their website and have sent notices out to all registered radon professionals in the state.
Then there is the hassle of arranging access, making an additional round trip to the house to pick up the test, record keeping, report writing, fielding questions from buyers, sellers and agents…..
